Review – Millarworld’s ‘The Magic Order Vol 4 #3’

The Magic Order Vol 4 #3 is the latest issue in the Image comic series created by Mark Millar and Olivier Coipel. The spellbinding art for volume 4 comes from Dike Ruan. If you’ve missed the other three volumes, they’re available to purchase online, but more importantly, from your local comic book store. You can find my reviews for the third volume here.

The Magic Order revolves around a group of magic wielders who protect the world from dangerous threats. It also doesn’t shy away from tackling heavy subjects. The story centres around the family who leads The Magic Order – the Moonstones. In particular, it’s the rebel daughter Cordelia whose usually more of a focus.

The previous issue ends with a twist revealing our heroes aren’t all as dead as the villains believe.

The Magic Order Vol 4 #3 opens with Cordelia and Francis travelling through Kolthur. They meet a man who finally sheds light on Edgar’s past. While we already knew he was the Wizard King, this is his origin on show. It’s an interesting development that seems like it’s going to be very important for the future of this particular arc. Edgar’s transformation is a slow burn, starting in another volume, and the payoff looks to be worth it.

There’s little action in this issue. It’s mainly focused on exposition dumping and it works all the better for it. We’ve had two action-heavy issues so it’s a nice respite. The dialogue is witty and snappy enough it keeps engagement levels high. It’s no secret The Magic Order is my favorite series from Millarworld and this only further shows why.

Dike Ruan’s art continues to be impressive. If you want to see more you should check out his Instagram.

The Magic Order Vol 4 #3 hits the shelves Wednesday 22nd March 2023.
