Russo’s Talk Spider-Man Design in ‘Captain America: Civil War’

There is one Marvel character reveal that everyone has waited for, Spider-Man’s big entrance in Captain America: Civil War. Fans clamor for any shred of evidence about Tom Holland’s appearance as the web slinger in the film. There have been a few discreet leaks, but for the most part, everyone was in the dark until the release of the second trailer for Civil War.

When we finally got to see Spidey, there were fans who loved the suit and felt that it paid homage to two of Spider-Man’s most famous artists, Steve Ditko and John Romita Sr. If you haven’t had a chance to see the trailer, then quit reading now and watch the trailer below.

Ok, now that we have gotten through that. How did you feel about Spidey’s new look? In a recent interview with Forbes, Joe Russo (one of the directors for Civil War) said that the way that Spider-Man was finally revealed was always part of the plan:

“We always intended to (reveal him that way). We thought it was a great way to reveal him. I think people are going to be happy with him in the movie, he’s got a very interesting role in it. Part of the fun of Spider-Man is that this film is basically a war amongst the Avengers and Spidey does not have the baggage that all these other characters have. He enters the story after the conflict that is happening between the Avengers and that gives him a very unique place in the story.”

There were fans that loved and hated the costume, but Russo says not to be worried. The suit that we see is not the finished suit, but it is close. There is also a possibility that the suit will evolve throughout the film:

“The design of the costume is what it is. That’s the design that we love, it’s the design that Kevin Feige loves and so on. He’s a very popular character so it’s always going to be controversial, people are always going to love or hate what you do with him, but all we can do is make sure that we love it, that we are true to ourselves and true to how we feel about the character and then hope that everybody else digs it. And there is still effects work that needs to be done on it.

Without question. We like making strong choices with characters so while this might be a slightly more traditional, Steve Ditko influenced suit, it is certainly in our vocabulary to develop it into something more extreme as the storytelling requires. I think there are things that people will discover when they see the film about why the suit operate the way it does, why the eyes move, all that stuff is substantiated. Everybody wants the answers yesterday but then what would be the point of seeing the movie?”

He has some good points. We would all love to know every facet of how and why the suit exists, but that would take the anticipation out of the film. Russo keeps addressing that the way Spidey is written into the film is where fans will embrace the character, and they cannot wait until fans get to see it:

Captain America: Civil War hits theaters on May 6.
