3 – Scream 2021
Scream is the fifth movie in the franchise. Yes, it has the same title as the original but hey, so did Halloween. There’s a lot to unpack within this one. First of all, there’s a new director on board. Actually, two new directors. While the other four are directed by Wes Craven, this one belongs to Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet. Unfortunately, we lost the horror legend that is Wes back in 2015. There’s a touching scene in the movie that sees actors from the past movies lend their voice talents to honour the legacy of Wes Craven.
With that, the pressure was on for Radio Silence to deliver a film that lives up to the other instalments. It introduces new characters while bringing back some old favorites. These new characters are archetypes we’ve seen before with several new spins put on them. It’s not perfect, no movie is, but for a movie with a lot riding on it, Scream certainly lived up to it.
This is also the first Scream movie I’ve got to see at the cinema. I was always too young to see the others so seeing this one on screen was great. The beginning is reminiscent of the original movie but it puts a twist on it. Speaking of twists, there’s one that fans of the original movie will love. Sadly, there’s also something that’ll make them upset. However, the film doesn’t do shock factor for the sake of it.
