‘Scream’ – Ranking the Entries of the Killer Franchise

2 – Scream 2

Sequels are rarely better or just as good as the original. This is something characters talk about in the movie to prove a point – there are exceptions to the rule: Terminator 2 and Aliens. Not The Empire Strikes Back though as it’s part of a trilogy. Not my words, Scream 2’s.

Scream 2 has the honour of being just as good as the original. It’s not better, nothing ever will be, but it’s better than most horror movie sequels. The story sees Sidney attending college along with Randy Meeks (another survivor of the first movie). Randy is a fan favorite. It’s through him we learn the rules of how to survive a sequel.

Unfortunately, those rules don’t help him. Randy’s death is possibly one of the biggest upsets in the franchise. I know I didn’t get over it when I first saw it.

The sequel also has one of my favorite Ghostface twists. Much like the Sith in Star Wars two there must always be. The only time this hasn’t happened was in Scream 3. The finale focuses on one killer and how they’ll use movies as their defence. However, it’s turned on its head when a second Ghostface is revealed.

They try to make it seem like Gale Weathers is the killer. Imagine that? One of the survivors from the previous movie is the killer. Luckily, it was only a red herring. The real killer was someone who was right in front of Gale the whole time. A reporter, Debbie Salt, is the killer. Wait, she’s not Debbie Salt? It’s here where it feels like Scream 2 is taking notes from Friday the 13th.

The second killer is instantly recognisable to Sidney. It’s Mrs Loomis (the mother of Billy Loomis). It’s a great twist that leaves your head spinning. These reasons are why Scream 2 is my second favourite movie in the franchise.

That can only leave one movie for the number one spot.
