If you thought that the Shrek franchise was finished, then you would be greatly mistaken. Although Mike Myers has disappeared from the Hollywood landscape, another Shrek movie may bring him back out of hiding. There is a new script being worked on, and it looks a lot further along than you might think. According to the screenwriter, the new script is a big reinvention of the franchise.
Screenwriter Michael McCullers sat down with Cinema Blend to talk about where the new script will take us:
I finished that script which I really, really, really love. It’s really personal to me. It’s got a pretty big reinvention behind it that I guess I can’t really reveal, but since DreamWorks was sold to Universal in that time for over $3 billion, I imagine they’re particularly interested in it stepping up and actually figuring out the future of the franchise in that way on the corporate level. Reinvention was sort of called for. There [have] been four movies and a lot of material, so the characters are pretty beloved and they’re great characters, but you also have to think of a pretty new take at that point.
There is still no sign on what he means by ‘reinvention’, but (as excited as he is to talk about it) it sounds like a really good idea for the franchise.
The first four Shrek films featured the vocal talent of Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, and Mike Myers. Will the new films bring the same voice talent back for the sequel? There is no telling at this point. If the script is accepted by Universal Pictures, then production could get under way fairly quickly on a sequel.
