There are a few franchises in Hollywood that are becoming exhaustive. One such example of franchises that need to conclude is Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean. The fourth film was ghastly, and although the Dead Men Tell No Tales was great, critical reception for the film was horrible. There are just so many ways a drunk Pirate can wobble.
Whether you liked Dead Men or not, a sixth film is in the chute and getting ready to begin to begin production. With Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tell No Tales $795 million global box office haul, Disney feels the world needs another Pirates film.
Dead Men co-director Joachim Rønning takes over directing duties for the sixth film according to Omega Underground. Rønning will shoot the Maleficent 2 before shifting to Pirates 6. Ted Elliot, Terry Rossio, and Jeff Nathanson are writing the script for the new installment.
Franchise star Johnny Depp will join the cast for the new film. Franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently stated that the franchise will not continue without Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow.
How many more Pirates sequels will we get? There is no telling, but looking at the global box office numbers the franchise earns, Disney will keep making more films. How long can a franchise continue before it goes stagnant or burns out? I quite enjoyed Dead Men Tell No Tales, which was a refreshing new storyline. It was something the franchise needed and opened up more space for new stories.
Could Pirates of the Caribbean 6 bring audiences more Orlando Bloom? It was a surprise to see him show up at the end of Dead Men, tying the entire franchise together. Whats next for the franchise? With an aging Depp could we see him in a wobbly wheelchair? How much longer will the franchise maintain its momentum at the box office?
