Sad news Spider-Man fans, but Tom Holland’s version of the webslinger is done in the MCU for now. This is sudden surprising news that will have lasting ripples around the MCU for years to come.
Disney and Sony Pictures failed to reach new terms in the Spidey/ MCU deal. This means that Marvel and Kevin Feige will not take part in any future installments of Spider-Man.
This ends a lucrative deal in which Sony Pictures made out like bandits.
The cause for the split is simple, Marvel and Disney felt that the deal moving forward should be equal 50/50 co-financing, with Marvel assisting in the greater Sony Spider-Man Universe. Sony shut down this offer quickly.
This ends one of the most-successful co-studio deals in Hollywood history. It’s understandable, as Spidey is Sony’s biggest franchise. But this move shows that Sony’s greed is taking over. Marvel currently receives 5% of first dollar gross.
Sony’s team, led by Tom Rothman and Tony Vinciquerra, countered by saying that they want Marvel to stay with the percentage they already are at, which Disney shut down quickly.
This resulted in Sony cancelling any further Marvel involvement with Spider-Man. Spider-Man: Homecoming and Far From Home both broke all-time records, including the highest grossing Sony film of all-time.
There’s two more Spider-Man films scheduled involving director Jon Watts and Tom Holland. It will take a big sacrifice from one studio in order to keep any resemblance of this deal moving forward.
This news comes on the tail-end of reports that Disney’s worried about a number of Fox properties in their catalog, and dismal quarterly numbers from the Theme Park division. Is this what prompted Disney to renegotiate the deal?
A deal could still happen, but it’s a longshot right now.
