There has been a lot to celebrate for comic book fans, ever since Sony and Marvel announced that they would be partnering up with Spider-Man. This deal ushered in a new era of studio competition. It is a partnership that can only help Sony. Marvel gets to refresh the hero, giving the fans the Spider-Man that they have waited for.
Sony has also given Marvel all creative control of the characters films that they release. This is the best possible situation for Sony, who has recently released lackluster Spider-Man films. The plots were a convoluted mess, with flailing nods thrown in to keep the audience’s attention. In Sony’s defense, it was a misunderstanding of what makes Marvel films popular that made the Amazing Spider-Man films fail. Andrew Garfield wasn’t a bad choice for Peter Parker, and the direction the franchise was going in wasn’t bad. I believe that little tweaks could have made the movies more tolerable than they are.
The biggest thing to focus on in this deal is that MARVEL WILL HAVE ALL CREATIVE CONTROL. This is the main reason that Spider-Man: Homecoming will be a better film. Marvel has established that they are not willing to sacrifice the reputations of their characters for a quick dollar, and the studio has yet to have a horrible movie. Since the announcement of the deal, Kevin Feige and Sony reps have stated that they will have creative control of their own Spider-Man films, but it seems that has changed. In a recent statement to HeyUGuys, Feige said that Marvel will have the creative control of the films:
“Amy Pascal, Tom Rothman who runs Sony now, I’ve known for years, so it’s been great, and they really are supportive in allowing us to make the creative decisions to make that movie [‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’], but they’ve been great partners, and so far so good on that movie. We wanted young. We wanted to do a very young Peter Parker, because — in the comics, and especially the early comics — he was young. He was in high school, and that’s what we wanted to do to make it different from the other films that have come before it.”
Thank God! I was still a little apprehensive about the Sony Spider-Man films. Knowing that Marvel will be making the big decisions, I am now fully onboard.
Spider-Man: Homecoming will hit theaters on July 7, 2017.
