HBO Max’s wasting no time, adding another DC Film spin-off series, featuring The Suicide Squad’s Peacemaker (John Cena). The eight-episode series also bring’s the film’s director James Gunn on-board to write the series.
John Cela reprises the role in the eight-episode Action Comedy series. The move’s a strong indication that Cena’s Peacemaker survives Gunn’s Suicide Squad.
Gunn not only serves as writer for the series, but will executive produce and direct the pilot along with a number of episodes for the series.
Not much about the plot’s known at the moment. The series aims to shed light on the origins of Peacemaker. He’s a driven character who believes that peace has a cost, regardless of the cost.
Gunn has a heavy schedule in the near future. He begins work on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and drops The Suicide Squad in theaters on August 6, 2020. Production’s slated to start in early 2021, right before Gunn jumps back over to Marvel.
In a recent statement, Gunn says:
“Peacemaker is an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag. I’m excited to expand The Suicide Squad and bring this character from the DC film universe to the full breadth of a series.
And of course, to be able to work again with John, Peter, and my friends at Warner Bros. is the icing on the cake.”
HBO Max’s on a tear recently, with this being the third DC spin-off series they’re planning. HBO Max already greenlit a Wonder Woman 1984 spin-off focusing on the Amazons of Themysceira, and a Batman spin-off about the Gotham PD.
HBO Max also has a Dune spin-off in the works.
