‘Star Wars Episode VIII’ Officially Titled ‘The Last Jedi’

Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Disney, Lucasfilm

The next Star Wars movie now officially has a title, and it is called Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The announcement came from StarWars.com, and finally gives us a glimpse at the main focus of Episode VIII. Rian Johnson has kept the title a secret for some time, along with pretty much everything else about this movie. Except a few minor hints, we know nothing more than a chance we will finally meet Rey’s parents, and Luke Skywalker will begin Rey’s Jedi training. We also know that the film kicks-off immediately after the events of The Force Awakens.

It is important to note that the title, The Last Jedi doesn’t necessarily mean that Rey or Luke will die during the events of the film, because the word Jedi can be singular or plural. Meaning that it either refers to one or both of them. Hell, it could even refer to other Jedi surfacing to combat the power of the First Order.

Director Rian Johnson took to Instagram to tease the new name inserted into the opening crawl for the film. Check out his post below:

Felt so good to drop this into the cut this morning.

Johnson apparently was so determined to keep the film’s title a secret that he didn’t even include it into the preliminary opening crawl. The image is of him in the editing room, and you can see the screen tot he left side of the shot. The title looks great in the big (presumably yellow) font of the crawl.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is written and directed by Rian Johnson, Produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Ram Bergman, J.J. Abrams, Jason McGatlin, and Tom Karnowski.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15, 2017.
