Story Arc Will Give Bill Cage Purpose in ‘Live. Die. Repeat and Repeat’
Edge of Tomorrow, I mean Live. Die. Repeat was a surprise hit of 2014. Director Doug Liman took a lot of liberties from the source material, but the film was still enjoyable for a number of reasons. It wasn’t perfect, but it was an interesting ride that treated fans to the film’s star Tom Cruise dying repeatedly each time in a better fashion than the time before. Liman finally talks about the sequel Live. Die. Repeat and Repeat that has been in production since 2014, revealing that Tom Cruise’s character (Bill Cage) will have a fulfilling story arc in the sequel.
In a recent interview with Cinema Blend, Doug Liman says that Bill Cage will have a real story arc in the sequel, and we have yet to really see all of it yet:
“You know, it’s a sequel that’s a prequel. That being said, he has a way better arc in the sequel. Because in Live Die Repeat, he’s basically saving the world because he lives there. He really is just trying to save the girl. He has not necessarily become less of a coward [by the end], and he hasn’t necessarily become a better person.
As a matter of fact, that was something that was important to Tom. When we were making the movie, we would joke that he’s only saving the Earth because he lives here. He would choose to just leave and go be somewhere else if he could.
So his character never really makes the transformation. Vince Vaughn’s character doesn’t really make the transformation in Swingers. I love anti-heroes, and sometimes I love them for their anti-heroness, so you don’t want to necessarily lose that. That being said, he has a proper arc in the sequel, which is why I’m so excited to make the movie.”
What that arc entails is anyone’s guess. Liman and crew are keeping tight-lipped about any details of the film or its plot. Details should begin to leak out shortly with both Liman and Cruise doing press runs for their recent film, American Made. In the novel, Cage time jumps a lot more than he does in the film, with scenarios and scenes playing out a lot different from the film.
You can bet that Liman will mine more scenes for the novel for the sequel in some capacity.
