‘Suicide Squad’: This Joker is a Little More Working Class?

The biggest controversy coming from the upcoming David Ayer movie, Suicide Squad, is over Jared Leto’s appearance as Joker. Since the very first image of Mr. J was released, via David Ayer’s Twitter,  the internet has been on fire. There are two sides to this argument, with most feeling like the new Joker not quite right. He is not a ‘better class of criminal’, he is flashy, covered in tattoos, and sports a reptile skin purple coat. Proponents for the new look state that this new Joker is an everyday villain with large aspirations. He looks rough and tough, and looks like a criminal mastermind should.

No matter what side of the argument you are on, by now, you probably either love or hate the new character design. With follow-up reports coming from the set, stating that Leto went above-and-beyond to embrace the role, and even took every opportunity to prank other cast members off-set. There is no denying that having to follow Heath Ledger’s award-winning performance is a big order to fill.

To Ink, or Not To Ink…

For months, Ayer has defended his choices with the villain, stating that when fans see the film they will forget everything they dislike about Jared Leto’s Joker. In a recent interview with CBR, Ayer took another moment to defend his vision, stating that the Joker’s tattoo’s are a Rosetta stone, with more to them than mere visual appeal:

The tattoos tell a very specific story… and eventually people will decipher them and understand what’s going on, but obviously they’re contentious, any time you do something new it’s contentious. There’s very specific stories and easter eggs in those tattoos. And even his teeth, there’s an entire story behind that which is absolutely canon. It’s putting his history on his body. This Joker is a little more working class, who I believe could live in our world.

Whether you like the new look of the famous villain, or you hate it, Suicide Squad is coming soon.

Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 5, 2016.
