Marvel is still hunting the perfect director to replace James Gunn on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. There were rumors that Marvel may ask Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok) to helm Vol. 3, but they were all wrong.
Waititi may seem like the perfect person to direct the film. His comical stylings fit the Guardians well. In an inteview with The Wrap this week, Waititi confirmed he is not going to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but he would like to do another film for Marvel:
“Nope. Not doing that movie. I’m hanging out with [Marvel] still. Talking about new stuff, but I don’t know what that might be yet.
I want to do another movie with them. I didn’t really [meet about this]. For me, those are James [Gunn]’s films. Going into something like that with his stamp all over his films would be like going into someone’s house and saying:
‘Hey, I’m your new dad, and this is how we make peanut butter sandwiches now.’ It feels kind of awkward.”
The next thing in the chute for Waititi is an episode of Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian for the Disney+ streaming service. The series is the first time that Star Wars is adapted in live-action for television.
The Mandalorian debuts in Late 2019.
