The Flash premiered on The CW network October 7, 2014. Since then Barry Allen’s (Grant Gustin) Flash costume gets an upgrade by Cisco Ramone (Carlos Valdes) every season. While this season is no different, the new suit’s appearance isn’t thanks to Vibe.
In the Season Five San Diego Comic-Con trailer fans saw Nora West-Allen (Jessica Parker Kennedy), who’s from the future, give her father something fans have waited for… It’s the Flash Ring!
The Flash Ring is in use by The Reverse Flash (Tom Cavanagh) during Season One but the following seasons didn’t give a hint of its return. Thankfully Season Five will finally bring it into the show’s continuity.
“It’s a fan favorite,” Nora correctly says to her father in the trailer as she passes over the Flash Ring. The Flash Ring is a fan favorite so it is good to see it finally coming to the small screen.
A couple of days ago the new suit leaks onto the internet and sends fandom into mass hysteria. Finally, we have a look at the new suit… yet some fans feel the new suit in the leak is underwhelming.
Luckily The Flash’s lead actor is always on hand to tell fans to calm down and wait for the real picture.
Grant Gustin shared a post on Instagram discussing the leaked photograph and the body shaming he encounters daily. Once again he proves why he is a superhero off-screen as much as he is on-screen.
Grant Gustin’s response to the leak and body shaming:
“So here’s the thing about this bullshit photo leak. It’s a cool suit. That’s a terrible photo that I was unaware was being taken, much less being posted. Some things need work and will be worked on.
We’ll get there. As far as the body shaming.
That’s what pisses me off. Not even just for my sake. I’ve had 20+ years of kids and adults telling me or my parents I was too thin. I’ve had my own journey of accepting it.
But there’s a double standard where it’s ok to talk shit about a dudes body.
I do my best to stay in shape and add as much size as I can throughout these seasons. I’m naturally thin, and my appetite is greatly affected by stress. Stress is something that ebbs and flows for me throughout a season.”
“Thus, gaining weight is a challenge for me. I didn’t cast a slim actor as The Flash. I went to an audition for a role I never dreamed I’d actually book. But, here I am 5 seasons later. I’m happy with my body and who I am.
Other kids who are built like me and thinner than me should be able to feel the same way.
Not only that, but they should be able to feel like THEY could be a superhero on tv or film whatever it may be someday. I love the suit that has been designed for me, and think when everyone sees it in its entirety, you will love it too.
Things have been adjusted since that leaked shot was taken, and more things will continue to be adjusted until it feels right.”
So, what does the new design look like? Take a look below for the first official picture of the new suit.
The new design of the suit uses less padding and features a more streamlined look. Grant Gustin also confirms on Instagram to a fan the costume trades in leather for a fabric look.
Even with some fans wishing for the chin strap to return, the reception is mostly positive in regards to the new look of the Scarlet Speedster. Grant Gustin continues his teasing on Instagram the chin strap may return in the future, telling one fan:
“You may not have to miss [the chin strap] for too long bro.”
By all accounts the tease lets fans know the suit will go through more upgrades as the season continues. By the end of Season Five, fans may see the most comic accurate Flash suit to be on the show and in any live action portrayal.
Let’s hope there are yellow boots in the future of The Flash.
