Aquaman was a hit in theaters, but a surprising announcement came when an announcement about a spin-off focusing on the Trench Kingdom came. Could the spin-off hit theaters before director James Wan releases Aquaman 2?
In another peculiar twist, the spin-off will not feature a single main cast member from Aquaman. It is an interesting move for Warner Brothers. But even more interesting than this, is the announcement that the Trench Kingdom spin-off will hit theaters before Aquaman 2.
In a recent interview with THR, producer Peter Safran confirms the spin-off will hit theaters before the Aquaman sequel:
“We always, even from the early concept art days, loved the idea of a Trench movie.
Then, when audiences embraced it in the movie itself the way they did, particularly that ant farm shot where the camera follows the Trench [creatures] following Arthur and Mera down into the deep, we just knew that we had something very special there and we knew what that movie should be.
And consequently, I suspect that that’s one that will come out significantly before Aquaman 2.”
The film will not be a prequel to the first Aquaman film, like most suspected. It will take place immediately after the first movie. There is no release date set for the film. It will likely hit theaters in 2021.
