The Boy stars The Walking Dead’s Lauren Cohan and sees William Brent Bell at the helm. The story follows a young American (Cohan) who travels to England to nanny a boy. However, once she arrives she finds out the boy isn’t a boy at all, but rather a porcelain doll.
The usual Horror tropes involving dolls come into play afterward. The doll moves, other items move, and messages appear on the walls. In truth, there isn’t much to the story until after the hour mark.
With only less than half-an-hour left, it picks up and becomes the opposite of what it appears. In lieu of spoiling the twists, I’ll say the marketing manipulates the viewer into believing the movie is something it’s not.
However, what the movie does well is its look into domestic abuse and how it changes someone. It connects to the overall narrative as well to deepen the choices made by certain characters.
The Boy is a slow movie that only improves in its third act. A sequel is coming early 2020 starring Katie Holmes.
