After not enjoying the last couple of movies on my list I had high hopes for MAMA to break the curse. Looks like I’ll be waiting another night for that to happen.
Andy Muschetti of IT: Chapter One and Two is in the Director’s chair and Jessica Chastain leads the cast. Add in Guillermo Del Toro producing, how can it go wrong?
Somehow that’s what happened to MAMA. At its core, there is a better story waiting to break through and an ending that didn’t become controversial to anyone who watched it.
In a similar fashion to the others I’ve seen recently, I cannot fault the acting. Jessica Chastain and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau knock it out of the park. The latter plays two characters with differing personalities. Chastain is a wannabe rockstar who doesn’t want to be a mother yet has the suffering thrust upon her.
The ending of MAMA is a hot topic due to its sad, and very weird, resolution. While Horror movies are given more freedom with being crazy, there’s a line that MAMA ran a marathon across.
MAMA is a disappointment that is saved only by the cast.
