A recent scoop from Heat Vision states that Warner Brothers Pictures was looking to make more Matrix films. Zack Penn is in talks to write a new treatment, and there is some interest in casting Creed star Michael B. Jordan to star. Rumors say that the studio had put together a writing room, which is a team of writers who will pull together ideas searching for a new direction for the franchise. They are trying to do with The Matrix what Twentieth Century Fox is doing with the X-Men franchise.
Original star Keanu Reeves says that he would return to the franchise, but with one stipulation: The Wachowski Brothers would have to return to the franchise. They were the original trilogy’s writers and director, but have had dismal films since then. The Matrix won 4 Oscars in 1999 and was the highest grossing film of that year worldwide.
Speculation has begun about the direction the films will go, and it looks like the studio is aiming to do a Morpheus origin story. Rumors state that the studio is eyeing Michael B. Jordan for the role of Morpheus, a role previously portrayed by Laurence Fishburne.
Zak Penn talked with fans on Twitter, and stated that the new films are not a reboot of the franchise. He says that the new films will continue the universe created by the first trilogy:
“Can’t comment yet except to say that the words ‘reboot’ and ‘remake’ were from an article. Let’s stop responding to inaccurate news. If I were going to recast Keanu Reeves, I would cast Keanu Reeves. Do I want to see more stories set in the universe of the matrix? Yes. Because it’s a brilliant idea that generates great stories. Look at what people are doing with Xmen universe. Between Logan and Legion and Deadpool, does anyone want them to stop? Not me.”
The studio is using the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Star Wars Universe for inspiration on how to make their own cinematic universe.
