‘Game of Thrones’ Was Getting Four Spin-offs, but Now It May Be Five

A few weeks ago, word came that HBO was considering potential spin-offs to their extremely popular fantasy series Game of Thrones. The network is looking at four possible spin-offs currently, but according to George R.R. Martin, they might add one more spin-off to the four others in the works.

This past Sunday, Martin, author of the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, says that one more spin-off is on the block. On Martin’s official website he states:

“We had four scripts in development when I arrived in LA last week, but by the time I left we had five. We have added a fifth writer to the original four. No, I will not reveal the name here. HBO announced the names of the first four, and will no doubt announce the fifth as well, once his deal has closed. He’s a really terrific addition, however, a great guy and a fine writer, and aside from me and maybe Elio and Linda, I don’t know anyone who knows and loves Westeros as well as he does.”

If a fifth project is in the works, HBO will have their hands full with spin-offs. This is a big gamble for the network. They might stretch the fan base thin by overloading them with Game of Thrones spin-offs. Martin says that his Dunk and Egg works will NOT be part of the new series, even though they are all prequels to Game of Thrones, telling the history of Westeros and more.
