Marvel fans may have another reason to worry about the future of Blade.

According to a new report from The Verge, Microsoft is reportedly considering canceling Marvel’s Blade as part of a sweeping restructuring of its Xbox gaming division. While nothing has been officially confirmed by Xbox or Bethesda, the report paints a troubling picture for one of the company’s most anticipated exclusives.

The Marvel’s Blade announcement came during The Game Awards in 2023 and immediately generated excitement. The game’s developed by Arkane Lyon, the acclaimed studio behind Deathloop and the Dishonored series. The game promised a mature, single-player adventure centered on Marvel’s legendary vampire hunter. Despite the cinematic reveal, fans have yet to see gameplay or receive a release date.

Now, that future appears uncertain.

The Verge reports that Microsoft is weighing the closure of several studios, including Arkane Lyon, while also exploring the possibility of selling the developer instead. Sources cited in the report claim Microsoft currently wants to cancel Blade, with the game reportedly slipping from an internal 2026 target to late 2027 while exceeding its development budget.

The reported cuts extend well beyond Arkane. Multiple Xbox-owned studios face potential closures, sales, or spin-offs as Microsoft looks to reduce costs across its gaming business. Reports indicate layoffs could begin as early as next week, potentially affecting hundreds of employees throughout Xbox Game Studios.

For Marvel fans, the timing couldn’t be worse.

Blade has struggled to build momentum across multiple forms of media. Marvel Studios’ live-action Blade film has faced years of production delays and creative changes. This leaves fans waiting for the character’s return to the spotlight. The Xbox game had become one of the most promising opportunities to reintroduce the Daywalker to a wider audience.

Arkane Lyon also represents one of the industry’s most respected developers of immersive action games. Microsoft closed Arkane Austin in 2024 following the disappointing launch of Redfall. Arkane Lyon continued to enjoy a strong reputation thanks to titles like Dishonored and Deathloop. Losing the studio or seeing Blade canceled would mark another significant shift in Microsoft’s first-party strategy.

It’s important to remember that none of these reports have been officially confirmed. Microsoft has not announced the cancellation of Marvel’s Blade, nor has it commented publicly on the reported restructuring plans.

Until the company makes an official statement, fans should treat the reports as unconfirmed. Still, if the claims prove accurate, Xbox could be preparing one of the biggest shakeups in its first-party portfolio since acquiring Bethesda.
