Edgar Wright Wants to Make a Sequel to ‘Baby Driver’

Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver is getting amazing reviews, and is actually one of the few original films to hit theaters this summer. The director has never considered doing sequels to his films, rather he likes to look forward to the next story. As a matter of fact, he made statements saying this very thing just a few weeks ago. It seems that the director is beginning to reconsider his stance about sequels to his own films, because Sony already wants a sequel to the amazing heist film.

In a recent interview with Empire via podcast, Wright says he is beginning to consider making the first sequel of his directing career:

“The studio has asked me to think about writing a sequel. And it is one of the ones that I might do a sequel to, because I think there’s somewhere more to go with it in terms of the characters. Baby has got to a new place.

Most sequels you have to contrive something so they go back to square one, unless there’s somewhere deeper for them to go. I think with ‘Baby Driver’ there’s more that you can do in that realm, and I sort of have an idea that if you did another [film] you would subvert his involvement in the crime in a different way so he’s not the apprentice anymore.”

Wright is still apprehensive despite sounding like he is already on-board. His biggest worry is losing a couple of years that he could use to tell new stories:

“I think the thing with sequels is that I’ve always been looking for what’s next? And the thing with any movie is, it’s going to take up at least two years of your life. Maybe three. So, when you’ve got youth on your side, and I’m already in my forties now, it’s like, I guess I would rather be telling new stories than revisiting old ones.”
