After Donald Trump Election, Even Hollywood Turns Partisan

Donald Trump promised to work with his liberal brethren if he were elected president. His promise to do away with the partisan politics that ground Washington DC to a halt helped him attain the US presidency. Fast forward, Donald Trump won what could be argued the world’s highest office and Trump’s pledge is seemingly less and less likely to happen. Even in Hollywood, the mecca of relaxed attitudes, political partisanship seems to be running more rampant.

The Golden Globes would become the focus of the world. Hollywood stars have always and will always spark fierce political debate. They use their place in society to promote views that sometimes rub conservative leaders the wrong way. This time, it was an actor one normally wouldn’t expect who grabbed conservative politicians’ ire, Meryl Streep.

The rabid froth into which president-elect Donald Trump has whipped the US political world has further divided conervatives and liberals in the US. Streep’s comments showed that Hollywood is no different. Hollywood liberals, such as George Clooney and Robert De Niro, were quick to defend Streep and her views. Whereas, the conservative set, Vince Vaughn and Mel Gibson were less impressed.

Liberal

George Clooney has never been one to hide the fact that his politics lean to the left. He came quickly to Streep’s aid. Unlike Streep, however, George Clooney was less subtle in his feelings toward Trump. During an event premiere for The White Helmet, a documentary about Syrian aid workers,  Clooney let loose:

“I didn’t vote for him, I don’t support him, I don’t think he’s the right choice. At this moment in our lives we have to hope that he doesn’t destroy everything. The reality is, you have to hope he will do a decent job, because if the United States fails, really terrible things happen, so you have to hope that he can.”

But he added: “I don’t see any signs of it.”

Legendary actor Robert De Niro also threw his support behind Streep. The icon of such films as Taxi Driver and Goodfellas would pen an open letter to Streep that he would share with the press.

What you said was great. It needed to be said, and you said it beautifully. I have so much respect for you that you did it while the world was celebrating your achievements. I share your sentiments about punks and bullies. Enough is enough. You, with your elegance and intelligence, have a powerful voice – one that inspires others to speak up as they should so their voices will be heard too. It is so important that we ALL speak up.

Conservative

While neither Vince Vaughn nor Mel Gibson have come out critical of Streep’s stand, the Internet was abuzz by their obvious displeasure of it. Among the gathered audience, cameras caught both Gibson and Vince Vaughn with extremely sour expressions. Internet speculation was rife. Twitter users were amused.

While La Dene Mayville posted: ‘ Vince’s hardened stare, his eyes, are worth a 1K words!! Priceless!’

‘The anger on Vince Vaughn’s face is the funniest thing he’s done in ages,’ joked a man named Austin.
