‘Ambulance’: Spoiler-Free Review of Michael Bay’s Latest

Ambulance, Universal Pictures

Ambulance is a return to form for director Michael Bay. It offers up some of his most entertaining work since the Bad Boys films, The Rock, and Armageddon.

The action kicks in quickly and when it does, it doesn’t slow down. There’s plenty of Bayhem present throughout the film. There are plenty of intense moments throughout the film, that pair wonderfully with ample amounts of loud destruction.

Ambulance also has a lot of wit and humor prevalent in most past Michael Bay films.

Check out the official film synopsis below:

In a high-speed pursuit that never stops, Will and Danny must evade a massive, city-wide law enforcement response, keep their hostages alive, and somehow try not to kill each other, all while executing the most insane escape L.A. has ever seen.

In Ambulance, Jake Gyllenhaal plays a psychopath ready to break. When a robbery goes wrong, two brothers are forced to hijack an EMS vehicle to make their getaway.

I love Michael Bay’s use of practical effects. It’s a fun throwback to action films we loved in the 80s and 90s. Bay takes a lot of influence from Michael Mann’s Heat, but it’s individually very much a Michael Bay film. It’s easy to see why this film’s getting widespread positive reviews.

Ambulance is a breath of fresh air for the action genre. Action films have lost so much quality over the last decade and a half, so, it’s nice to get back to peak form. The film’s not perfect. It’s not a masterpiece. But it’s a heck of a lot of big-screen fun. I would definitely suggest seeing this movie in theaters.
