Movie trailers are everywhere, from YouTube to Facebook, television commercials, film site, and even on airline flights. They are the inevitable outcome of the summer blockbuster season, and an inescapable introduction to every film. Movie trailers have become a way of life for most of us, but that doesn’t mean we have to like them. One filmmaker is not a huge fan of movie trailers: Twin Peaks creator David Lynch.

Most movie trailers give away too much of the film, ruin great jokes, and clue audiences into big plot shifts before the title screen appears for most films. A lot of great movie experiences are made lackluster due in part to a film getting too many movie trailers. Are they bad? Are they good? That is a debatable topic. Filmmaker David Lynch is not a big fan of the medium. Details of the new season of Twin Peaks was a highly guarded secret. Lynch tells Rolling Stone:

“These days, movie trailers practically tell the whole story. I think it’s really harmful. For me, personally, I don’t want to know anything when I go into a theater. I like to discover it, get into that world, try to get as good of picture and sound as possible, no interruptions – so you can have an experience. And anything that putrefies that is not good.”

James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2)  is great at not giving too much away in his film trailers. It is a hard feat to manage, but films shouldn’t give away the keys to the castle right out of the gate. Audiences need to experience plot elements that they do not know are already coming. Studios need trailers to let audiences know about upcoming films, but are studios giving away too much? Lynch thinks so. It is a rare feat to get surprised by films today, even though filmmakers put a lot into crafting trailers.
