Cast Responds to ‘Suicide Squad’ Critical Reception

Suicide Squad, Warner Bros. Pictures

The critical reception for Suicide Squad is dismal at best. Critics are tearing the movie apart for having a disjointed plot, thin characters, and overall just being a complete mess. This spells disaster for DC, who really needs a film that is a hit with the fans. Just because critical reception for the film is not very good, doesn’t mean that fans won’t love it. We will have to wait until Monday to see what movie-goers say about Suicide Squad.

There are a number of rumors that you could cite that will lead to the film’s demise, and the number one reason on that list would be the reshoots that were rumored a few months ago, in the wake of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice reviews. The rumor states that the reshoots were done to inject more humor into the film. There is even a rumor swirling that there were two edits of the film made and screened for test audiences to determine the best finished film.

At the London première for Suicide Squad, the cast was asked what they thought about the negative reviews the film is getting. Batman-News has gathered quotes from the cast about the reviews.

Cara Delevingne was not happy with the critic backlash, saying:

“The critics have been absolutely horrific, they’re really, really horrible. You know, I just don’t think they like superhero movies. It doesn’t really matter what the critics say at the end of the day. It’s the fans that we made this movie for.”

Margot Robbie went on to say this about Suicide Squad:

“At the end of the day critical acclaim is really nice, but we made it for the fans. If the fans like it then we did our job”.

Will Smith added:

“I think people had expectations that may have been different, but I’m excited for the fans to get to vote.”

David Ayer, the film’s director took to social media to say:

“I made the movie for real people who live in the real world. I made the movie for people who actually love movies and go and see movies. The movie’s a lot of fun and the fans are really going to enjoy this.”

Even other directors are getting in on the sound-off. Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins (who saw the film at the première) had choice words about all the criticism as well:

“Uh… You guys. Super confused. Just went to the premiere of #SuicideSquad. Hadn’t seen it. It’s great!. Not sort of great. GREAT! I mean… I loved it. So surprised by some reviews. I don’t get it. I thought it was awesome. And NOT just because I’m in the DC world. Truly.”

The film is garnering bad scores on the review sites, only managing to hit 28% on RottenTomatoes. On Metacritic it has grabbed a 42/100.

Suicide Squad is not a bad film, it just suffers from a lot of the same issues that most films in the DC cinematic universe suffer from. Bad pacing, thin characterization, and a convoluted plot are a few of the issues that the film suffers from. It is a fun ride, and if you enter the theater with low expectations, you will leave satisfied.
