After a troubled second entry in the franchise, it appears that the X-Men film Dark Phoenix may have a few problems of its own. Fox recently reshot the entire third act of the film, retooling the local for a more intimate setting.
Director Simon Kinberg spoke with EW this week about the challenges of directing this film and also about the reshoots. Dark Phoenix wrapped production in October 2017, but during post-production, the team decided the film needed retooling.
One of the bigger changes made to the film was the visual appearance of Sophie Turner’s Phoenix fire. They made her appear ‘less flamy, more cosmic’.

“I think the biggest challenge is modulating the film so that we have the big scale and visual-effects action that these movies require, but balancing that in a way that feels calibrated with the drama.
You have these big space sequences and trains flying through the air and people firing lightning bolts, but you also have a lot of emotional, four-page dramatic dialogue scenes.”
The future of the franchise is uncertain. Disney gave the X-Men back to Marvel after the House of Mouse purchased Twentieth Century Fox. Kinberg wouldn’t comment of the franchise’s future.
Rather, he’s focused on wrapping up the current run of X-Men film with Dark Phoenix:
“I’m thinking about delivering and finishing this movie the best we possibly can.” The article also confirms the film has no post-credits scenes.
