‘Doctor Who’ at SDCC 2018; New Trailer and More

The last time the Doctor graced television screens, we saw the 12th Doctor regenerate into the 13th. If you’re having withdrawals, rest assured that new footage from the next season of Doctor Who is here. Check out the first footage of Jodie Whittaker as the 13th Doctor in the first full trailer below:

“If I asked really really nicely would you be my new best friends?”

Those are the words uttered by the new 13th Doctor in the Official Trailer for Season 11 of Doctor Who. This is Chris Chibnall’s first season as Showrunner for Doctor Who and it looks promising already.

For fans of two-part stories, I’m sorry to bear the bad news from an interview Chris Chibnall did with Digital Spy:

“It’s 10 standalone episodes, there’s no two-parters or anything like that. What we want is for people to feel like we’ve got the range and variety of Doctor Who this year.

So if you’ve never seen it before, you’re gonna fall in love with it, and if you have seen it, you’re gonna get those things that you love about the show across the 10 episodes.”

Thankfully there will be a Christmas Special this year, so the 10 episodes will turn into 11 by the end of the year. The new design for The Doctor’s trusty Sonic Screwdriver also featured at SDCC this year.

The Sonic Screwdriver was created by Victor Pemberton for the serial Fury from the Deep with the Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton). It’s been used by many Doctors, and its most recent incarnation was a TARDIS blue for the 12th Doctor. Sadly for him, he only got to use his Sonic near the end of his tenure.

The new Sonic Screwdriver is completely different to anything that has come before. Its design is more simplistic than recent versions and blends effectively with the overhaul of the series by Chris Chibnall. It has a similar lava theme to the new logo and other promotional material.

What could all that mean for the series?

More information on Season 11 and how the Doctor affects the lives of his companions dropped at Comic-Con.

Yaz (Mandip Gill) is a 19-year-old girl from Sheffield, England. She enjoys her job but wants to do a little bit more and asks for it. It’s safe to say she ends up with a little bit more than she bargained for.

Graham (Bradley Walsh) is a cautious character. Jodie Whittaker explains Graham would enjoy a chair and a sandwich in every scene.

Chris Chibnall applauds the dynamic between the four actors as Doctor and companions. It sounds like it will be a treat for the audience to watch.

Describing the Doctor as “young, bubbly, funny” is Tosin Cole, while Mandip Gill promises a “humourous, witty and energetic” Doctor. It sounds like Jodie Whittaker will be a Doctor who can balance serious and comedy, which is always something that will make or break the actor who plays the part.

Unfortunately, there isn’t more information on Season 11, but there’s enough to whet the appetite. Doctor Who season 11 doesn’t have a definite release date yet, but there are rumors it will air in October 2018.If those rumors are true, then the familiar blue Police Box will materialise onto screens soon!
