It’s been a ravishing 30 years since the rag-tag misfits The Mighty Ducks took on the world. Now, news comes that Coach Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez) returns for an entirely new television series on Disney+!
The new tv series takes place in Minnesota, but the Ducks aren’t the same underdogs you remember. They’re a highly-competitive, juggernaut youth hockey team.
When 12-year-old Evan (Brady Noon) gets cut from the Ducks, his mom Alex (Lauren Graham) and he set out to create their own team to take on the competitive Ducks.
Hopefully, the Ducks aren’t the Hawks (villains) in the new series.
In a recent statement, Estevez said:
“Once a Duck, always a Duck!. After 25 years, I am delighted to lace up my skates, put on Coach Bombay’s jacket and return to play the iconic character for this new chapter in The Mighty Ducks franchise.
Likewise, I am thrilled to return to my old stomping grounds with my friends at Disney and Steve Brill, the original creator of the franchise, to join them on their exciting new platform, Disney+.”
The series comes from ABC Studios with Steve Brill involved. Brill created the original franchise, and comes on-board as co-creator and executive producer.
Disney took to Twitter to announce the casting:
The Mighty Ducks holds a special place in the heart of a generation, and a revival of the franchise will only die more subscriptions to Disney+. The franchise gave birth to the NHL hockey team the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.
Disney has their foot firmly on the gas with Disney+, and is showing no signs of stopping the momentum any time soon.
