‘Far From Home’ Has to Make Over a Billion

Spider-Man: Far From Home, Sony Pictures

An interesting report popped up a few days ago that digs into the deal between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. but unless Far From Home performs well, the merger could be in jeopardy.

The 2015 contract allowed the character to show up in Sony Films and the MCU

In a very recent edition of Richard Rushfield’s newsletter The Ankler, it revealed that there is more to the Sony/Marvel deal than we knew:

“The original Sony/Marvel/Spidey deal to co-produce these movies stipulated that if this Spidey [Far from Home] cleared a billion, Marvel would get to oversee a third. If it hadn’t, full control would have reverted back to Sony.”

You’re reading that right. Marvel was so confident that they would make a billion dollars on the second Spidey film before fans or the studio had any idea how Holland would do.

Simply put, Sony would have the ability to bail on the deal if Far From Home doesn’t make over a billion dollars at the box office.

Will the film make it to the magic $1 billion mark? Spider-Man: Far From Home is already at $661 million after just 8 days! That officially puts it ahead of Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Holland previously stated his contract covers three solo Spider-Man films and three MCU films. He only has one more Spidey film left on his contract. It’s likely Far From Home will pass the mark.

Regardless of what happens, Sony would be stupid to sever ties with Marvel.

Far From Home is not just another film for Marvel to squeeze cash out of fans. It is a fantastic film full of surprises. There is a lot to digest in this movie, and it has a ton of surprises. It truly is the last film of Phase 4.
