Festive Sitcom Specials to Watch This December

Gavin and Stacey

Oh, oh, oh Merry Christmas! Fans of Gavin and Stacey will know what I’m saying. We’re going back over the pond for this one. Set in England and Wales, Gavin and Stacey stars The Late Late Show’s James Corden along with a stellar cast.

The series originally ran from 2008 to 2010 before returning for a one-off special in 2019. It’s a series fans are clamoring to see more of. This is especially due to how the 2019 special finished.

The first festive special sees Stacey’s (Joanna Page) side of the family travel to Essex for the celebrations. Everything is going well until a secret is exposed and the two families end up at war with each other. As always, things are taken too far and certain characters overreact.

Yet, that’s the charm of the series. It’s unapologetically real.

Smithy is fighting to see as much of his son, Neil the Baby, as much as he can. However, Nessa’s (Ruth Jones) boyfriend, Dave (Steffan Rhodri) is always there and stopping Smithy from seeing his son. There are more twists and turns in the episode but it ends on a note that will leave you feeling warm inside.

The 2019 special picks up around nine years after the finale. Gavin (Matthew Horne) and Stacey have three kids but are a country apart. Luckily, they haven’t broken up. Gavin had to go back to Essex for a work-related meeting. This time it’s the Essex lot who are going to Barry in Wales.

Smithy and Nessa are friends, who used to enjoy benefits, until the former got a new girlfriend. She is trying to change Smithy into someone he’s not and this is seen by everyone.

It’s this that spurs on the cliffhanger that leaves fans desperate to see more.
