Warner Brothers Pictures dropped the first full-length trailer for Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix. The film explores the the origins of the greatest DC Comics villain, the Clown Prince of Crime.
Check out the trailer below:
The film is not tied to the DCEU, and instead acts as a stand-alone character study of the Joker, Batman’s greatest foe. This marks the first time that the character gets an origin.
Phoenix plays Arthur Fleck, a man facing the cruelty and outright scorn of society along with the indifference of a system that allows him to spiral from vulnerability into depravity.
A clown-for-hire by day, he strives to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds that the joke always seems to be on him.
The film takes a uniquely modern approach to the creation of Mr. J. Instead of a vat of poison being the crux of the villain, this time around society is to blame for causing the character to twist into insanity.
The trailer even features someone who appears to be Thomas Wayne punching Joker out. Could the film feature an interesting twist where Bruce Wayne’s parents helped create The Jester of Genocide? This would be a unique feature.
The film is getting standing ovations in the festival circuit. Launch day cannot get here fast enough. Does DC finally have another hit? It appears this is the case.
The film, set in 1981, stars Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron and Shea Wingham.
Joker hits theaters worldwide on October 4.
