Fans of the Gran Tourismo gaming franchise rejoice, you’re getting a live-action movie! Sony Pictures and Playstation Productions set August 11, 2023, as the release date for the first film set in the professional driving simulator universe.
According to the studio, they’re trying to avoid taking the Need for Speed approach of creating a crime drama for the narrative to drive the film. This is an aspirational drama inspired by the games, which is inspired by the spirit of driving.
This movie is the ‘ultimate wish-fulfillment tale’. Check out the official synopsis from Sony below:
“Based on a true story, the film is the ultimate wish fulfillment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional race car driver.”
Director Neill Blomkamp (Elysium, District 9) takes the helm of this film that looks to be gaining traction. Production on Gran Tourismo is firing on all cylinders. These car puns can go on all day. Jason Hall wrote the script. Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, Doug Belgrad, and Dana Brunetti share production duties.
The games sold more than 85 million copies to date. This is a good sign for the game adaptation, in a time when game adaptations are rarely great.
The Sonic the Hedgehog films are pretty much the only shining lights among a plethora of bad game adaptations. The most recent adaptation attempt, Paramount’s Halo series is rarely good. Actually, it’s really bad, with a few great action sequences sprinkled throughout. *Sad face*
Playstation Productions Uncharted adaptation, starring Tom Holland, grossed over $400 million at the global box office earlier this year.
