‘Prey’: ‘Predator’ Prequel to Feature Comanche Language Dub
Director Dan Trachtenberg dropped a bombshell today, saying that for the first time in film history, Prey, the Predator prequel movie, will feature a Camanche language version of the film.
Director Dan Trachtenberg’s Prey takes place in the Camanche Nation 300 years ago. Centered around a young female warrior (Amber Midthunder) as she faces off against an evolved alien hunter.
The trailer dropped this week showing all of the characters speaking English and Comanche. According to Trachtenberg, the production went to great lengths to accurately represent the Camanche Nation.
Because of this, the film cast a number of Native and First Nation actors.
The creative team tried to avoid the ‘Hunt for Red October thing’. This happened in an early scene of the film where Russian characters begin by speaking Russian. Asfter a deliberate visual shift, all of the characters speak English for the remainder of the film.
The Red October crew never came up with a good way to make both languages work. They shot the film with both getting considerations. The trailer featured scenes in both languages.

According to Trachtenberg and producer Jhane Myers via Slashfilm, Prey is the first new release film to also be made with a Camanche language audio dub track. Myers and Trachtenberg go on to say:
Myers: “Just the fact that people will have a choice, the world will have a choice to listen to the whole film in Comanche is amazing.”
Trachtenberg: “Both languages are spoken, but when you hear English, it’s as if it’s Comanche.
But what Jhane is speaking to is on Hulu, there will be a Comanche dub of the movie, so you can watch the entire movie in Comanche with the original actors returning to perform their roles.”
Myers hopes that Prey will motivate other filmmakers to follow suit with future projects they’re working on with a native language option.
