Halloween 2021 Review #1 – ‘Friday the 13th Part V’

Halloween is nearly here. This time around that statement is doubly true. The celebration of Halloween is coming but so is the next entry in the Halloween franchise. A couple of years ago I tried to track every horror movie I watched in a month.

However, some of it is lost due to unforeseen circumstances.

This year we’re trying something different. A new review will be up every day. The idea is for me to watch a Horror movie I haven’t seen yet.

Although, there are two movies on the list I have seen before. I’ll be watching their extended editions so they’re still new to me.

The first movie is Friday the 13th Part V: a New Beginning. I’ve already seen the first four so it seemed a good way to start. This was watched on the 2nd of October, so there is no review for the 1st of October.

Friday the 13th Part V is a 1985 psychological horror that sees a character from the previous movie return. In Friday the 13th Part IV we meet Tommy Jarvis as a child. This movie shows him grown-up and unable to let go of his past with Jason Voorhees.

Even though Jason is dead, Tommy sees him wherever he goes. Things only become worse when someone wearing a hockey mask starts killing.

There isn’t much to say about Friday the 13th Part V other than it’s mostly a paint-by-numbers slasher that reeks of the tropes known in 80s horror. It’s known for its brutal kills and over-the-top nudity and drug use. The latter two forming part of the issue of the movie.

The first twist at the end was one I didn’t see coming. Finding out the killer was a father out for revenge makes sense.

The original Friday the 13th is famous for its twist where the killer isn’t Jason, but his mother, Pamela.

Since Friday the 13th Part V is a new beginning, it was a good idea to mirror the original.

Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for the second twist. After seeing Jason everywhere he goes, Tommy snaps and dons the mask. The movie ends with him as the new hockey mask killer. The original idea saw Tommy as the new villain.

Luckily, the producers listened to the outcry from fans who didn’t like the twist. My issue with it is simple. Even though it’s from the 80s where things are different, seeing another person with mental health issues becoming the killer is disheartening.

Out of all of the Friday the 13th movies I’ve watched so far, I’d say this is the weakest. Yes, that includes the infamous Jason X where Jason kills in… space.
