With Avengers: Endgame dominating the box office, Marvel Studios has moved their sights on to the future phases of the MCU. Could Marvel already have Henry Cavill in mind to portray Wolverine in the MCU?
It is an intriguing idea. If you logged into your social media account in the last week, you might have seen a post or two about this. It is news that set the internet on fire, and divided fans on both sides of the Marvel/DC rivalry.
It is an idea that seems a bit off for Marvel. Firstly, Marvel CEO Kevin Feige said that the X-Men are five years from an MCU debut. Usually, when Feige says something, it sticks.
Marvel’s great at perfect castings, but there is two things that worry me about a possible Henry Cavill Wolverine casting. The first one is the actors age. Cavill is 36 now, and would be 41 by the time the mutants debut in the MCU. They would be better off courting Hugh Jackman for the role again.
Secondly, Cavill comes with a hefty price tag, being that he is also Superman in the DCEU. This is one of the reasons why the studio chose to finish Tony Stark’s story the way they did. He was the highest paid actor in the MCU by far.
Cavill could work as a replacement to Jackman, but that would assume that Marvel will continue the X-Men continuity started by Fox. They likely will only continue the young team’s continuity led by Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy, if any.
It would be a smarter move to start over with the entire team, even though a few of the younger castings were great. Marvel cound also lean on the multiverse to crossover the same actors from Fox to the MCU. Marvel spoke with the Fox actors after the Disney purchase.
A lot of this is speculation, and other than rumors, it is hard to find any concrete evidence that the studio has thier eyes set on Cavill. There’s no official word that Marvel even interviewed the actor.
Whichever way Marvel goes, Wolverine’s the most-important X-Men casting. I’m sure they will chose the right person for the job.
