Gregory’s Girl is a 1982 coming-of-age story set in Cumbernauld, Scotland. It tells the tale of Gregory Underwood, an awkward teenager, with a love of football. One day his world is turned upside down when a girl tries out for his School’s football team. Finding her attractive, like the rest of the team, Gregory vyes for her attention and asks her out.
What happens next is a series of events embroidered with Scottish wit and humor only known to comedies from the 80s. For those who saw the movie during its release, it’s become a cult favorite. Whenever the question “what movie set in Scotland should I watch?” is raised, Gregory’s Girl tends to be on the list.
There are two versions of Gregory’s Girl in America. One that has the normal broad Scottish accent and another with Anglicized accents. Both versions are available on the DVD release. It’s not surprising this happened since the accents are thick.
Several critics applauded the movie for providing fresh characters and not succumbing to the tropes of coming-of-age stories.
