Filth is a black comedy based on the book by Irvine Welsh. The main premise is about a drug-addicted and manipulative Detective Sergeant experiences severe hallucinations while he investigates the murder of a Japanese student.
James McAvoy shines in Filth as the foul-mouthed Detective Sergeant who gets off of making the lives of his friends and co-workers a misery. Even though it’s a comedy, Filth doesn’t shy away from getting serious and delving into mental health issues.
Since the novel’s publication in 1998, the adaptation was passed to several Producers who all thought it was unfilmable. Its Box Office take saw it bring in $9.1 million worldwide while it made $1.4 of that in the United Kingdom in its opening weekend.
Reviews for Filth are mixed with the consensus on Rotten Tomatoes stating “warped, grimy and enthusiastically unpleasant, Filth lives up to its title splendidly.”
Of course, there are plenty of other Scottish movies. Harry Potter is technically a series of movies set in Scotland since Hogwarts and Hogsmeade are located in Scotland. However, we would be here forever listing all of them. These are only 8 movies from various genres but all are good in their own way.
