James Gunn Chimes in on Marvel/Fox Deal For Ego the Living Planet

In the wake of the news about the deal between Marvel and Twentieth Century Fox for a character swap, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director, James Gunn, took a moment to talk about the deal, and why it was needed to happen. In the swap, Marvel got the pivotal character Ego the Living Planet, and Fox received Negasonic Teenage Warhead.

Negasonic Teenage Warhead was used in the Fox smash movie Deadpool. Although her powers were changed for the live-action adaptation of her, it allowed Deadpool to include the X-Men in some capacity. The X-Men are pivotal to Deadpool, as the character commonly includes different members of the mutant team in the comics from time to time.

Marvel received Ego the Living Planet, a character that James Gunn planned on serving as Star-Lord’s father in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2. Kurt Russell has been cast as Ego, but little else is known about him as of the time of this post. Gunn added to the discussion by giving a reason why Ego the Living Planet was pivotal to not only Star-Lord’s origin, but to the success of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Here is what he posted on his Facebook page:

When I first pitched Ego as Quill’s father, I THOUGHT we owned the character. After I had worked out a very elaborate story with Ego the Living Planet as a very important part of the Marvel cosmic universe, I learned that we actually didn’t own the character. I had no back up plan, and it would be nearly impossible to just drop another character in. Thank God Fox came to us and wanted to make a trade…

Deadpool 2 will no doubt include the newest brooding member of the X-Men, Negasonic Teenage Warhead. We will see the impact of Ego the Living Planet on Star-Lord and the reset of the team in Guardians Vol. 2.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5, 2017.
