‘Madame Web’ – Dakota Johnson Cast in Lead Role

Madame Web is officially moving forward at Sony Pictures. Created by Denny O’Neil and John Romita Jr, Cassandra Web is a blind and paralyzed precog who is hooked up to life support that looks like a spider. Her ability to see into the future is restricted to Spider-totem characters.

Fans of the 90s Spider-Man animated series will recognise the character where Joan Lee voices her. She plays major roles in big Spider-Man and Marvel stories where she oversees everything that happens and will happen. Madame Web is also a mentor to Peter Parker, among other Spider characters and is a mutant. Considering Disney have the rights to the mutants, there’s a chance she won’t be in this version.

First reported by Deadline, Sony has found their Madame Web in Dakota Johnson.

Johnson’s credits include the Social Network, Bad Times at the El Royale and the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy. The Cassandra Web version of Madame Web is older than Dakota Johnson, which means they are either reinventing the character or adapting a different version. The second Madame Web is Julia Carpenter who takes on the mantle after being Spider-Woman and Arachne.

Julia Carpenter’s Madame Web origin would be an interesting movie as it shows her dealing with newfound powers, as well as the side effects that come with it. After all, when Cassandra gives her powers to Julia, it includes her blindness. There’s even a chance Sony can try their own Ant-Man with Cassandra Web teaching Julia about her powers.

Unfortunately, like all of Sony’s spin-offs so far, there’s no connection to Spider-Man so her origin will change. However, with how Spider-Man: No Way Home went the live-action spider-verse may see Madame Web and Spider-Man meet.

Olivia Wilde is directing a Spider-Woman movie while a series about Silk is coming to Amazon Prime. If everything goes well, maybe a Spider-Gwen movie will happen and we’ll see Miles Morales.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is currently in theatres while Morbius releases on April the 1st.
