Movie Review – ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’

Spider-Man: No Way Home is the concluding instalment in the high school trilogy for the Sony and Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man partnership. After Far From Home, Peter Parker is a fugitive as some people believe he is the villain Mysterio and J. Jonah Jameson portrays him as.

The movie stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Alfred Molina, Willem Dafoe and Jamie Foxx. It’s directed by Jon Watts with a script by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. Of course, it also sees the return of Benedict Cumberbatch as the master of mystic arts, Dr Strange.

Before we look at the movie itself, let’s take a look at the trailer below:

Spider-Man: No Way Home focuses on Peter Parker trying to live with his identity revealed. We see how different people react to it, including Peter’s teachers and his schoolmates. While some of it is played through humor, it’s taken as seriously as the subject should be. After a series of disappointments, Peter visits Dr Strange in hopes he can turn back time. However, after Infinity War and Endgame it’s untenable.

Thankfully, there is another spell. It’s here where Peter screws everything up and opens the multiverse. The trailers already show Doc Ock, Green Goblin, Sandman, Lizard and Electro. It’s up to Peter and his friends to stop the multiversal tyrants. In typical Spider-Man fashion, nothing’s as easy as it seems. That is all I can say about the movie without giving away spoilers.

You need to see this for yourself.

Spider-Man: No Way Home balances its humor and heart in typical MCU fashion. This is a Peter Parker fans have been wanting to see for a long time. Peter Parker’s turmoil is the central conflict of the movie and Tom Holland hits it out of the park as always. Zendaya and Jacob Batalon have more to do in this movie and are the heart of it. It’s them who continuously keep Peter grounded.

While I enjoyed The Amazing Spider-Man 2 this version of Jamie Foxx’s Electro is better. If you go from watching the Raimi or Webb movies straight to this one you won’t notice much of a difference in the villains. It’s great seeing Alfred Molina’s Octavius and Wilhem Defoe’s Norman back in action. Even though it’s been over a decade, it doesn’t feel that way. They haven’t missed a beat.

Spider-Man: No Way Home celebrates the present while honoring the past. I’m not sure it’s the best Spider-Man movie although it has some of the best moments in Spider-Man’s live-action history. Prepare yourself to laugh and cry. This is a Spider-Man movie that perfectly captures the essence of the masked menace. I mean, of the webhead.

Spider-Man: No Way Home swings into theatres on December 17.
