The New Mutants will be (correction) was going to be the first X-Men spin-off film (in what will be three), until it was setback almost a year. Originally planned to hit theaters this April, The New Mutants will now hit theaters in February 2019. This is a big shame, because the first trailer for the film looks dark, broody, and wonderful. According to star Maisie Williams, this delay is a good thing.
In The New Mutants, Williams plays Wolfsbane, a young Scottish girl with the mutant ability of Lycanthropy. In an interview with Collider, Williams says that the delay will give the production team the time needed to make it even better than it already is:
“Actually, I think it’s for the better. I think it’s good that we’ve got more time. We’re not so strapped and up against it. It give us time – it gives me time to get to know the project once its finalized.
Films take a real different shape after you finish shooting, and after they have edited. Sometimes you watch a movie and with the score, etc, it’s a completely different film than the one you had in mind. I guess you only know that when you have just done the premiere or whatever.
Your spending your whole life working on this film that actually you don’t know much about at all. It’s quite nice that there is the time, to you know, make it the best that one can and familiarize ourselves with it and when it comes to releasing, really push it hard.”
Principal photography wrapped last September, so making the April deadline was always cutting things close. The delay will allow production the time needed to complete the film, rather than rushing it out for a deadline. Directed by Josh Boone, The New Mutants stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Henry Zaga, Blu Hunt and Alice Braga.
