Marvel is a powerhouse when it comes to making great films, and giving fans almost exactly what they want. Each film takes risky moves, pushing the envelope a little more. There are rumors that the studio has a secret timeline scroll. It’s a safe bet that the studio has a tight grip on every move the MCU makes.
Could Marvel already have a plan in place through the year 2024?
Marvel is keeping things quiet about the next phase of films until after the release of Avengers 4 next May. Only a few films from the next phase are known at the moment. Captain Marvel hits screens in March, right before we get Avengers 4. Followed up by Spider-Man: Far From Home, the sequel to Homecoming.
There is also Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3, but that film has yet to receive a release date.
Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, spoke with Birth Movies Death about what films might fill the three-dates-a-year timeslots the studio currently has on reserve for 2020, 2021, 2022. But Feige says that not only do they already know the direction they are headed, there is a plan in place through 2024:
“The main strategy is that in many ways I feel like we’re still in the midst of delivering on the promise from that last event! We’ve still got Captain Marvel and Avengers 4. Those are the big ones left to go, having just finished this. So it’s about completing the promise before you start promising a whole lot of other things.
Obviously people are aware of Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Guardians 3, which James [Gunn] gets into prep on very soon. Outside of that, we like the idea of having the world do what we’re doing, which is focusing on the immediate future.
Once that happens, we will. I don’t know that we’ll do exactly the same kind of thing that many years out. But there are secret vaulted doors in Marvel Studios that lead to essentially what we’ll be doing between now and 2024.
We’ve started to, yes, within the last six months or so. We’ve started to engage on certain developmental levels on a lot of those things going forward. Which of those will be made, when they’ll be made, the ones that bubble up to the top are the ones people have heard of.
But that’s all I’ll say about that.”
Feige says that studio focus is on post-production of Avengers 4, and updates where the film is at the moment:
“We’re just starting the edit. The [Russo] brothers have worked on their cut, and we’ve been together in the editing room for a couple weeks now, so it’s very early days. But it’s much earlier than usual.”
Marvel’s future looks bright, as long as the superhero movie bubble doesn’t pop. Superhero films are showing no signs of slowing down. Spider-Man: Far From Home began filming a few weeks ago and the script for Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3 is finished.
Avengers: Infinity War hits Digital HD on July 31 and on disc and VOD on August 14. The set is expected to feature 10 mins of deleted scenes, a gag reel, commentary from writers and directors, and plenty of featurettes.
