It won’t be long until Doctor Strange hits Blu-ray (February 28) and Digital HD (February 14). The big question on everyone’s tongue is where will the franchise go next? The movie was full of mysticism, spectacle, and came with plenty of strangeness. One thing was certain, Doctor Strange was an instant fan-favorite.
In a recent interview with Coming Soon, director Scott Derrickson was asked if the franchise would turn to some of the scarier elements that made their way into the comics. This primarily occurred during the Ditko era of Strange. According to Derrickson, the sequel will not have scarier elements yet, but rather will go weird:
“I wouldn’t necessarily rule anything out. That’s certainly where the comics went in the ’80s but I also think that was probably the weakest era of the comics. The alternate dimensions and possibilities of the multiverse that we set up with the first film already give limitless possibilities.
What I will say is that the goal would not be to underutilize that, or to create something that was less innovative than the first ‘Doctor Strange.’ The comics, especially the Lee/Ditko comics, were always pushing into unexpectedly weird places and storylines. That has continued on into the current Doctor Strange comics, which are really great. So anything’s possible with Doctor Strange, I wouldn’t rule anything out.”
Derrickson went on to say that Nightmare is his personal favorite villain, but there is a good chance he won’t show up yet. Nightmare is the first foe that Doctor Strange encountered in the comics, and is the ruler of the dream dimension. Benedict Cumberbatch is set to return to the MCU as Doctor Strange in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War. During the comic book run of Infinity War, Strange plays a pivotal role in assisting the Avengers. To take down Thanos, he sacrificed the lives of most of the heroes willingly to distract the Mad Titan. Whether we will see this in the film is anyone’s guess at the moment.
