Ever since The CW’s 2019/2020 crossover event Crisis on Infinite Earths fans have been wondering what is going on with the newly created multiverse. Before it was rebooted, the fourth installment surprised everyone with a cameo from Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen. He and the CW’s Barry, Grant Gustin, shared a scene that looked to set the stage for The Flash movie.
In the scene, Ezra’s Barry mentions Victor Stone aka Cyborg. From a message from The Flash movie producer Barbara Muschetti to a fan, it looks as if we will be seeing Ray Fisher’s Cyborg again. When asked not to forget about him, Barbara replied “obviously” so it looks as if he will be in the movie.
However, it isn’t just Cyborg that should get people excited. Recently, the rumor broke Jeffrey Dean Morgan is returning to portray Thomas Wayne. However, it will be the Flashpoint version who is a Batman who loves guns while his wife, Martha, becomes the Joker.
According to TheWrap reporter Umberto Gonzalez, Morgan’s Batman hasn’t been in a script for years so fans might not want to be excited too quickly.
Thankfully, it isn’t all bad news. TheWrap has also exclusively revealed that a former Batman will be returning for The Flash. Michael Keaton is no stranger to the world of comic books as he’s currently playing Adrian Toomes/the Vulture for Marvel and Sony.
Although, it seems as if he’s returning to his old stomping grounds to play a Bruce Wayne similar to that of Batman Beyond.
It’s said The Flash is going to introduce audiences to the idea of the multiverse. For those who read the comics and watch the CW shows, you will already have an understanding of the concept.
Crisis on Infinite Earths has shown Batman 1989 does exist on another Earth and now it’s coming to the movie side. Considering the multiverse is one of DC’s biggest draws compared to Marvel, it’s a wise decision for the company to use it.
Keaton is in talks to to have a multi-picture deal so he can act as the ‘Nick Fury’ of the DC Cinematic Universe. There he will be training the heroes, including a young Barbara Gordon.
Due to this, it looks as if the Matt Reeves directed Batman is unfortunately not part of the canon timeline and will be similar to the Joker.
It’s going to be interesting to see how the multiverse will change the direction of live-action DC properties. By using it, they can easily bring in different versions of characters played by different actors to explain casting changes, or even create new storylines.
An example of this is Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker facing off with Keaton’s Batman. It’s unlikely to happen but that is effectively what the multiverse can do.
If the Michael Keaton news is true, then it will possibly be confirmed August 22 at the DC Fandome online convention. There will also be panels for Wonder Woman 84, The Suicide Squad, Black Adam, Shazam!, Aquaman, as well as the TV shows.
Rumors are also suggesting DC will be revealing two new video games in the guise of Gotham Knights and the Suicide Squad. This comes down to Warner Brothers purchasing domain names Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad Kills the Justice League.
Before that happens, Wonder Woman 84 arrives in theatres on October 2, 2020.
