A surprise announcement came this week that stated that Constantin Films is rebooting the Resident Evil movie franchise. This announcement came just sixth months after the final film hit theaters, and before the movie hits Blu-Ray. Why a studio would make this announcement is a mystery.
Yesterday it was announced that James Wan (The Conjuring) will produce the new film which is planning to have a six film story arc, like the first series. The franchise is apparently striving to go in a new direction with the story, but it is unknown what direction that currently is.
Milla Jovovich, star of the current Resident Evil franchise, had a few choice words for the studio over the rushed announcement of a reboot. In an interview with ComicBook.com, she urges the production to listen to fans of the franchise when making the new films:
“I think a lot of people with these franchises kind of put the cart before the horse. There’s a danger to that. They’ve been wanting to reboot Resident Evil for a long time, and listen: I love the Resident Evil world. I think it’s a great property, I would do it if I was a producer.
I think what made Resident Evil so special is that the people involved really loved what they’re doing and really were fans of the game. I would suggest that you find people who have that same passion for the property before you talk about reboots.
I think if you get into this kind of genre, people are very sensitive to fakes. There’s some real fans in the sci-fi/action/horror world, and they’re not idiots. They can smell when something is done because people love it and when something is done just to monetize an opportunity.”
Her words are harsh and stern, but they appear to come from a good place. Jovovich doesn’t want to upset the fans, and that is never a good thing. The new films should take a darker turn and capitalize on the horror elements of the games. This is why Wan was brought in. His horror series The Conjuring is one of the scariest franchises out at the moment.
No release date is currently set for the rebooted Resident Evil film.
