Hold the Phone: Universal is Developing a Live-Action ‘Voltron’

Voltron: Legendary Defender, Netflix

Universal Pictures has a new film in the works. A new report states that they are developing a live-action adaptation of the 1980s animated classic Voltron! Are you excited, because you should be. The film is being penned by screenwriter David Hayter (Watchmen, X-Men). Universal has only ordered a script for the hit show, but this could mean that we will begin to hear movement shortly.

This film is one of a ton of films that Universal Pictures received in the Dreamworks Animation deal. While Universal sifts through everything they received in the deal, Voltron has been given the green light. This news comes after Netflix successfully revamped the animated classic. Originally airing from 1984-85, Voltron quickly became a hit with kids alongside of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and Transformers. In an ironic twist, these shows now all have films in production.

Voltron follows five young people who become pilots of five robot lions, who combine to become a gift robot called Voltron: Defender of the Universe. Most of the story takes place in space on the planet Arus, as they fight against the evil forces of King Zarkon from Planet Doom.

Tom Engelman (The Chronicles of Riddick, The Lone Ranger) is set to produce. That’s it, I’m going to go dig out my toys and my Defender ring now.

You can also check out the current incarnation of Voltron Legendary Defender on Netflix, with the second season premiering on January 20th.
