1. …Assemble (Avengers: Endgame)
What more can be said about this scene that hasn’t already been said? It’s the culmination of 12 years of storytelling, 22 movies all building towards this one moment.
Marvel had built such a rapport with their audience over the years. It was great to see the fans rewarded with a scene that’s so satisfyingly fan-service-y without ever condescending.
It’s no wonder the movie went on to become the highest grossing film of all time.
As we reach the film’s conclusion, Cap stands alone against Thanos’ entire army. He’s still ready to fight; he can do this all day. As he’s preparing to battle, a voice interrupts and before long, all the fallen heroes from Infinity War are returning to assist him.
Almost every single superhero from the MCU arrives to battle in a stirringly powerful climax.
Few scenes in cinematic history have reached the dizzying emotional heights that Marvel has managed to achieve here. Everything about this scene works.
“Portals” is one of Alan Silvestri’s best compositions, and the way it’s used here compliments the gravity of the situation.
Since the first Avengers movie, Marvel has teased the usage of the famous “Avengers Assemble” catchphrase from the comics. When Cap finally says it here, we just can’t image it anywhere else. It’s the perfect place for it and Chris Evans’ delivery is just what it needs.
We may never get another theatrical experience like Endgame. With the build up of 21 films can we really feel the magnitude of a franchise at its peak. Marvel delivered a perfect scene that works on every single conceivable level. Bravo.
