Review – Millarworld’s ‘The Ambassadors #3’

The Ambassadors #3 is the next issue in the newest series from Millarworld. Mark Millar pens the script while Travis Charest provides the art for this issue. The Ambassadors is about a scientist who cracks the code for superpowers. However, rather than giving the powers to a Government or the highest bidder, she promises to give them to six people with a good heart.

While this review is spoiler-free for the newest issue, there will be big spoilers about the last issue. Therefore, if you haven’t read it, don’t read on.

The second issue introduces the first Ambassador in the form of Binnu Bhatia. After wakening up from a coma, Binnu discovers he’s in the Ambassador program and he’s trained to use his powers. However, his personal life crumbles when he finds out his best friend married the woman he saved during a terrorist attack. The issue ends with Binnu receiving an offer that could change everything for the worse.

The Ambassadors #3 revolves around a mother and son who are bestowed the powers. The first half focuses on a letter from the mother (Yasmine Gauvin) who has issues with her son. She hopes the powers will bring them closer together. The next half shows them with their powers and the dynamic duo they become. While it’s a fantastical story, at its heart it’s about the parent and child relationship. Out of the three issues so far, this has to be my favourite because of that.

Travis Charest’s art is different from the previous issues. The ingenious idea of having a different artist work on each issue keeps the story fresh. It also helps carve an identity for each new character introduced. Where issue one reminds me of Superman comics, issue three’s art is reminiscent of Hellboy. After this, it would be great to see Travis Charest work on a full Millarworld series.
