Review: Millarworld’s ‘The Magic Order Vol 3 #4’

The Magic Order Vol 3 #4 is the latest issue in the Image comic series created by Mark Millar and Olivier Coipel. The series is currently in its third volume. If you’ve missed the first two volumes, they’re available to purchase online, but more importantly, from your local comic book store. You can find my reviews for the second volume here.

The Magic Order revolves around a group of magic wielders who protect the world from dangerous threats. It also doesn’t shy away from tackling heavy subjects. The story centres around the family who lead The Magic Order – the Moonstones. In particular, it’s the rebel daughter Cordelia whose usually more of a focus.

Let’s see what’s in store in The Magic Order Vol 3 #4.

The Magic Order Vol 3 #4 wastes no pages. Everything is coming to a head; if you aren’t already gripped, this is the issue that’ll do it to you. It opens with the first-ever Moonstone watching television. He’s living the dream by using his time recovering to binge as much television as possible. Through this, he’s learning about the world so he can return to it easily. It’s an interesting concept. Normally, a character from the olden days being in the modern-day comes with the fish out of water trope. That’s not here, and it’s refreshing to see it.

Next up, we’re continuing the story with Rosie Moonstone and Sasha Sanchez. In the previous issue, Sasha wants to train Rosie and help her harness her power. Now, we’re seeing the fallout from his idea. Again, don’t expect it to be easy. This is Mark Millar we’re talking about. He treats us to one of the coolest ideas that makes this writer happy.

While I’ve preferred the last two volumes so far, The Magic Order Vol 3 #4 is quickly pulling me into this arc. If the quality of this volume continues on its trajectory, it’ll be another win for Millarworld.

I’m always saying the same thing when I review art. Gigi Cavenago’s art is spellbinding. It’s difficult to find the words to express the same opinion over and over but it’s the truth. Wait until you see the page with a really cool monster on it. He’s excelled himself with it.

When it comes to the ‘coolest idea’ Gigi changes up his style. He invokes classic horror comic books. The use of black and white differentiates it from the rest of the story. Furthermore, it makes me want to see a classic horror story written by Mark Millar with Gigi Cavenago’s art. Perhaps with an old-school monster such as Frankenstein’s Monster?

There’s more good news for Mark Millar fans, The Magic Order isn’t the only comic by him that’s releasing on the same day. The long-awaited follow-up to American Jesus is here. American Jesus: Revelation #1 arrives along with The Magic Order.

The Magic Order Vol 3 #4 is available from Wednesday 26th October 2022.
