Night Club #1 is the first issue in the newest series from Millarworld. Mark Millar is writing the series while Juanan Ramírez provides the art. Over the years Millarworld has delved into assassins, superheroes and wizards. Now, it’s time for Mark Millar to dip his toes into another exciting world. This time, he’s sinking his teeth (yes I know I’ve used it twice) into vampires.
The official synopsis reads: you’re 17 years old and you’ve been bitten by a vampire. Do you live in the shadows and drink human blood, or do you use your newfound gifts for the dream costumed superhero life you’ve always wanted? You’re bulletproof, you can crawl up walls, and you can turn to mist, bats, or even a wolf. Why not have a little fun?
From the first issue, we can already see our lead character thinking about using their newfound powers for something different.
Night Club #1 introduces us to Danny Garcia. He’s a teenager who wants to get rich and famous through content creation on YouTube. His idea is to perform a dangerous stunt involving parkour on a tall building. His friends, Sam Huxley and Amy Chen are against the idea. They see it’s dangerous but Danny refuses to listen.
Of course, this is where things go wrong for Danny. After a stint in the hospital, he awakes to find he’s tied to a bed. What’s more, he now has the powers of a vampire. The rest of the issue I’ll let you experience for yourself. With only one issue out, Night Club #1 is already shaping up to be something special.
There are plenty of vampire stories out there. You might even ask yourself if we need more. Even if it wasn’t written by Mark Millar, I’d still say we need as many as can be written. However, with Mark at the helm, you know to expect the unexpected. Where you see the path going one way, Mark finds the route you didn’t know exists. I look forward to seeing where he goes with this series. I’m already hooked on the premise.
Providing the art is Juanan Ramírez. One of my favorite things about his art so far is how visceral it gets. Whenever a vampire is present, there’s a balance between light and dark through different forms of shading. Furthermore, he uses mostly muted colors around the vampires. He provides a brutal contrast in these scenes by letting the red of the blood stand out more. Through this, it draws the eye of the reader and provides an eye-catching experience.
Night Club #1 is already looking like it’ll be what Kick-Ass and The Secret Service were to superhero and spy stories. By that, I mean, taking a well-known story and turning it on its head, providing a fresh experience with the Millarworld flourishes we’ve come to know and love. Collecting comic books can be a costly endeavour but this is one series that won’t break the bank. Millarworld and Image are releasing the entire series at $1.99 per issue. With such a low price there’s little reason to at least not give it a chance.
It looks like it’ll be one you won’t regret.
